AI phone agent for car rental

Every rental call answered, 24/7.

A traveler lands late. A renter needs more time. Someone is stranded with a vehicle that will not start. These calls need different answers. Lineshift identifies the request, uses the information and tools available to your operation, and makes the next step clear to the caller and your team.

A rental phone agent handles a late pickup request, an extension enquiry, and a roadside call.

Coverage

Before, during and after the rental

01

New enquiry

Collect pickup and return locations, dates, vehicle needs, and contact details. Check live availability and pricing where connected, or send a complete quote request to the branch.

02

Pickup change

Identify the reservation and branch rules. Confirm a new time only if the reservation system accepts the change; otherwise, assign it for review.

03

Extension or return

Check the active agreement and applicable rules before a change is approved. Requests involving availability, revised terms, or authorization can go to a person when needed.

04

Roadside call

Capture the agreement, location, callback number, and nature of the problem. Follow your assistance procedure and hand urgent or ambiguous situations to the responsible team.

Workflow

A captured request is not automatically a confirmed change

Representative call

“I have your request” and “it is confirmed” are different answers

Representative workflow. No customer reservation is modified in this example.

Renter

“My flight was delayed. Can I pick up the car at 10 instead of 8?”

Lineshift

Lineshift finds the reservation, checks the branch's late-arrival rules, and submits the proposed change when the connected system permits it. If the system returns an updated reservation, the agent confirms the new time. If it does not, the agent tells the customer the request is pending and routes it to the branch.

That distinction should be visible in your reporting too: enquiry captured, action confirmed, human transfer, and follow-up pending are separate outcomes.

01

Each branch has its own reality

Airport desks, city branches, and franchise locations may have different hours, return procedures, inventory, and escalation contacts. Configure answers and routes by location. The agent should use current branch instructions and avoid promising a service that branch cannot provide.

Your team sets the steps that can be completed automatically. For the rest, Lineshift gathers the context and moves the conversation to the right person. A disputed charge, an incident, or an uncertain roadside situation should reach someone who can make the decision.

Build coverage around the systems you have

The first deployment can answer branch questions and capture requests. With approved access to reservation, fleet, and assistance systems, more workflows can be completed and confirmed during the call. Each action should have a clear acknowledgment from its system and a fallback when that acknowledgment is missing.

Start with a few branches and call types. Review the caller's outcome, the matching reservation or task, and the team's follow-up before expanding.

FAQ

Questions rental operators ask

Can it change an existing reservation?

That depends on the connected reservation system and the rules for that booking. Lineshift should confirm a change only after the system accepts it.

Can it dispatch roadside assistance?

If a connected assistance workflow accepts the dispatch, the agent can report the acknowledged status. Otherwise, it should escalate through your existing assistance process without claiming that a truck has been sent.

Can every branch use different instructions?

Yes. Configure location-specific hours, pickup and return guidance, eligible actions, and escalation contacts.
